Welcome to the website of Ant. Křížek s.r.o., a family company with more than a century of tradition in the picture and mirror framing and mounting field. Our company provides a comprehensive service and professional advice in its field, which come from many years experience. Our permanent customers include galleries, auction halls, museums, artists and collectors, but also customers who appreciate art and want to find a way to improve the look of their home or office environment.

Our selection is made up of hundreds of wooden and metal frames and mounts representing a wide range of possible uses – from historical works to classical and contemporary designs. One of our major advantages is our collection of picture frames which we produce ourselves, which stand out from standard offers found on the market with their original and unique design. We want to be able to implement what the customer desires while maintaining a high level of quality which is achieved, among other things, through the use of traditional manufacturing processes while taking advantage of the latest knowledge and technology.

Our website will give you some basic information to introduce you to the field of picture and mirror framing while presenting you with what options and benefits it can bring to you in as simple a manner as possible. The most suitable method of framing is always a very personal choice based on your own emotions which is not always easy to make. Our company and our employees are fully aware of this fact which is why we are very happy to provide you with a maximum level of professional advice and knowledge to enable us to fully meet your expectations.

The history of our company

The company was founded in Prague in 1890 by craft carpenter Antonín Krížek. After his previous experiences in Vienna, he had soon come to realise that to survive among the competition meant not to be afraid to be different and so he began production of his famed ‘structural basis’ picture frame models, which combined gold plating, veneer and glaze without the use of classic ornamentation. The company subsequently moved from its old and no longer appropriate location under one of the bridges in Prague’s Smíchov district to a new workshop and opened its first store in Lidická street in Smíchov. During its successful period of operations, Ant. Křížek’s company had the honour of working for artists such as Toyen, Langer, Zrzavý, Procházka and others. The company continued to function until 1959 when, despite utmost efforts, it was definitively nationalised. The nationalisation deeply affected the Křížek family. In order to protect at least some of the company’s heritage from destruction, the founder’s son succeeded in breaking into an officially sealed space in the workshop’s roofspace and was able to take away the most important sections of the company’s valuable archive there. From 1968, the company once again began building up operations until 1989, when the founder’s son together with his grandson and the current owner began the new era of freedom by fully renewing the operations of Ant. Křížek s. r. o.

Over the past twenty years, we have been able to take part in many important projects and co-operate with a number of leading art institutions. Some of the most important include the exhibition which took place to celebrate 100 years since the founding of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague Castle, many years of co-operation with the National Gallery – the Asian art collection, the mounting of large format photographs for the EXPO World Exhibition in Hannover, the permanent photographic exhibition in the Museum of Photography in Jindřichův Hradec, co-operation with the Moravian-Silesian Gallery in Brno and the permanent exhibition in the Charles Bridge museum. We also co-operate with leading Prague auction houses and galleries.

For many years, the company has experienced great demand for original mounting of valuable artworks. Some of our customers are already very familiar with the art world thanks to their experiences received from all over the world and information which is easily obtainable in the modern age. These customers demand a high standard which stylistically and technically matches their artwork. And it is in this particular market segment which we have been specialising for many years.
